Improving Your Eye Health

You take the time to worry about your heart and your lungs, so why wouldn't you think about your eye health? If you are like most people, it might be because you don't know that much about how to take care of your eyes. Fortunately, I have been working with other people to teach them about eye health for the past twenty years. My father lost his eyesight because of a few bad decisions, and I don't want to see other people go down that path. Read here to learn why you should exercise, eat right, and see your eye doctor regularly.

2 Ways To Make Your Recovery Easier After Vision Correction Surgery

James Castro

Vision correction surgery is a great choice for making your vision as good as possible without using corrective lenses, but many people are a bit apprehensive about the recovery time and procedure. However, there are multiple ways to make the recovery process much easier following the surgery, such as the two listed below.

Utilize Eye Drops

The single most important thing that you can do to help your recovery is to ensure that you use all of the eye drops that you are prescribed. The eye drops that you will be given will include ones that supplement your tear production and ones that will help prevent infection. However, you will also want to consider over-the-counter eye drops for use after the prescription ones run out.

Over-the-counter eye drops are often necessary because many people experience dryer eyes after their surgery is complete. The issue with this is that if you have dry eyes it can be both uncomfortable and can cause the recovery process to take longer.

The reason that the recovery process can take longer is that when your eyes are dry you may be tempted to rub your eyes, which can cause you to dislodge the corneal flap if done within the first few weeks following the surgery. Dislodging the flap will often require that you return to your eye doctor and have it repositioned.

Protect Your Eyes

Another major way to make your recovery easier and faster is to make sure that you protect your eyes as much as possible. One way to do this is to wear sunglasses whenever you go outside in order to avoid dust and other debris from getting into your eyes. If dirt gets into your eyes you may end up rubbing your eyes out of habit, which can cause issues with the corneal flap that was created during your surgery.

In addition to wearing sunglasses outside, make sure to utilize eye shields whenever you go to bed for the first week or so following the surgery. The eye shields will either be hard plastic lenses that you can place over your eyes with medical tape or safety glasses. The eye shields will not only prevent you from rubbing your eyes in your sleep but will also prevent you from rubbing your eyes on your pillow or blanket.
